    Commercials - Part 4
Is anyone else annoyed by the Mia Hamm car commercial where you see the car come around a curve and then you realize some guy is driving her. I'm assuming it's her car and she doesn't even get to fucking drive HERSELF.

It's the little things that show how far we still have to go. *sigh*

    PUNS, GLORIOUS PUNS!
[personal profile] dine found a mistake in a story: Wall scones lit the corridor at regular intervals.

And wondered, "Which sort of scone provides the best lighting - poppyseed, chocolate chip, blueberry? what's your guess?"

    My answer?

"Of course *currant* scones will provide the best possible lighting! Duh! :DDD"

    Heeee!!

    Dear Pro Writer*
    Dear Pro Writer-

"Nonplussed" does NOT mean "nonchalant" or "unfazed". It means "completely boggled" or "utterly confused".

So when your character is nonplussed because "they've seen it all before", YOU'RE USING IT WRONG!

    No love,

    Regina

    And we get screwed AGAIN
So the NIH has finally come to an agreement with the Henrietta Lack family about the disposition of her cells.

Great, right!? Justice has been done. A woman has finally been recognized for her contribution to science!

Except if you read the article, there's this: The book chronicled how before Lacks died died [sic], a research team at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore led by George Otto Gey took a sample of tissue from her cervix. He found he was able to grow them in dishes outside the human body.

One problem. Mostly *he* didn't do any such thing. The bulk of the culture work (the figuring out of the nutritional and environmental needs of the cells) was done by his technician Mary Kubicek. Who rarely gets a mention in most of the articles. (Just FYI, this is HARD. Nowadays there is pre-made media/incubators/nutritional supplements for all cells types, but back then NADA. She was *inventing* cell culture as she went along.)

    *sigh*

I'm really fucking sick of this.

    Horribly late but...
Thank you so much to all of you who wrote condolences about the death of my Mom.

I keep tripping over things I'd like to tell her or ask her. I keep having reminders of all the ways she was in my life.

For 31 years (ever since I went off to college), I called her almost every Saturday morning to check in. This past weekend was the first time it wasn't necessary.

When I was 17, she and my dad and I took a trip to Washington state for a couple of family functions. None of the other siblings (5) went with us. Now I'm the only one who remembers that trip.

It's harder than with my dad because a) he had Alzheimer's and was pretty much not there anymore anyway and b) I still had my mom as a touchstone.

Next month will be my birthday. The first one I won't share with her. (I was born on her birthday.)

I think this is gonna take a while...

    Calling SCAdians in the area...
    ...for a photo op.

For a long time I've admired a small (~20-25 foot) stone tower that's in a park near my house. We frequently drive by it and I always take a moment to wonder if you could get to it. I've recently started walking around the lake in that park, and to my delight, the path goes right by the tower. It's possible to walk right around it.

It's on the top of a slope that goes down to the road, and I'm pretty sure it would be possible to film it in such a way that there would be no signs of modern life in the pic.

I'd love to get a bunch of people in medieval garb (with banners and such!) to pose around the tower. (It's not possible to get to the top of the tower.)

    Any interest??

    Bad news.
I just found out my mom died.

My sisters had been trying to reach her on the phone and finally they called a neighbor who went over and found her.

Not an astonishing turn of events. She was almost 86 and never really bounced back all the way from the broken hip. Unless the law demands it, we probably aren't going to have an autopsy.

No definitive plans yet as far as funeral etc. There's not any major hurry for it. We're getting her cremated and then probably we'll have a memorial service and she'll be buried in the Church garden (like we did my dad) sometime in a few weeks.

One of those "good news/bad news " things
So MrGiraffe has had off and on (getting more 'on' lately) pain in his side for the last two years. They checked his gall bladder and liver and this and that and the other thing, but couldn't find anything wrong.

Finally they thought to MRI his spine.

Good news: they found what was causing the pain.
Bad news: one of his disks (somewhere in the T5-6 range) bulged and a piece broke off and is now irritating the T6 nerve slightly above that area.

So it looks like he'll be in the market for disk removal surgery sometime in the nearish future.

I know this is a fairly common procedure and if it can stop the pain, woohoo! But still, one worries.

I know several of you have gone through this/know someone who has gone through this. Any advice/comments/suggestions would be appreciated.

    Dear Pro Writer
    Dear Pro Writer-

It would be helpful if your characters could do basic arithmetic.

On page 7, in a quote from the previous book, the evil elf prince gives our heroine 10 weeks, 10 days and 10 hours before he invades.

On page 8, our heroine tells us that 10 weeks, 5 days and 7 hours have passed.

And then, on page 9, claims they have 4 days and 17 hours left.

    *facepalm*

    Get a better editor.

    No love,

    Regina

The better you know me, the funnier this will be:

My sister just asked me to be vice-president of the church she operates.

    I KNOW, RIGHT!?

    Book recs
A couple of very science-y scifi book I've enjoyed recently:

    1. Wool by Hugh Howey.

Post-apocalyptic life in the future in an underground silo. Things are not what they seem.

There are two more in the series; Shift and Dust, neither of which have I read yet. AFAICT, Shift is a prequel and Dust is a sequel.

    2. The Martian by Andy Weir.

Astronaut gets stranded on Mars. Has to figure out how to survive. Sounds pretty grim, right? And it is, except for the fact that he's a total wiseass and (most of) it is told in the form of a diary. I laughed out loud throughout the whole thing. *And* it's grim, and tense, and exciting. And the author did a metric fucktonne of research to get the science (mostly) right.

Really awesome book. You can read the first couple of chapters on the link I gave you. If you aren't completely sucked in, I'll be shocked.

Let's give this "memories" thing a try...
Every time a new fan-popular movie comes out and people make spoilery posts before I have a chance to see it, I think to myself, "Self, you really should find a way to tag these posts so you can go back and read them once you've seen the movie."

Yeah... so I'm a bit slow.

So far I have 5 posts tagged in memories under "CW:TWS". Let's see how many I get before I manage to drag myself to the theater.

(To be clear, it's not that I'm not wildly enthusiastic about seeing it. It's that the thought of dealing with the douchebag way people act in movie theaters nowadays fills me with dread.)
