    Dear Pro Writer
    Dear Pro Writer-

It would be helpful if your characters could do basic arithmetic.

On page 7, in a quote from the previous book, the evil elf prince gives our heroine 10 weeks, 10 days and 10 hours before he invades.

On page 8, our heroine tells us that 10 weeks, 5 days and 7 hours have passed.

And then, on page 9, claims they have 4 days and 17 hours left.

    *facepalm*

    Get a better editor.

    No love,

    Regina

The better you know me, the funnier this will be:

My sister just asked me to be vice-president of the church she operates.

    I KNOW, RIGHT!?

It's for tax/inheritance reasons, not religious ones but still...

    Book recs
A couple of very science-y scifi book I've enjoyed recently:

    1. Wool by Hugh Howey.

Post-apocalyptic life in the future in an underground silo. Things are not what they seem.

There are two more in the series; Shift and Dust, neither of which have I read yet. AFAICT, Shift is a prequel and Dust is a sequel.

    2. The Martian by Andy Weir.

Astronaut gets stranded on Mars. Has to figure out how to survive. Sounds pretty grim, right? And it is, except for the fact that he's a total wiseass and (most of) it is told in the form of a diary. I laughed out loud throughout the whole thing. *And* it's grim, and tense, and exciting. And the author did a metric fucktonne of research to get the science (mostly) right.

Really awesome book. You can read the first couple of chapters on the link I gave you. If you aren't completely sucked in, I'll be shocked.

Let's give this "memories" thing a try...
Every time a new fan-popular movie comes out and people make spoilery posts before I have a chance to see it, I think to myself, "Self, you really should find a way to tag these posts so you can go back and read them once you've seen the movie."

Yeah... so I'm a bit slow.

So far I have 5 posts tagged in memories under "CW:TWS". Let's see how many I get before I manage to drag myself to the theater.

(To be clear, it's not that I'm not wildly enthusiastic about seeing it. It's that the thought of dealing with the douchebag way people act in movie theaters nowadays fills me with dread.)

    Chinese flight update
I heard from my sister. She's safe and sound in Hong Kong.

One of her customers was supposed to take the same route on the same airline today. (!!) They changed their flight to a different airline.

Thank you for all of your support!!

Wow, not really the reply I wanted
Email sent to all of my siblings:

    "Subject: Missing Chinese plane

Can anyone reassure me that [Sister #4] wasn't on that flight?

    Thanks.

    Regina"

Automatic reply from [Sister #4]'s email:

"I will be out of the office on business travel in China from 3/4 - 3/13.

I will NOT have cell service during this time.

If you require immediate assistance, please contact your Customer Service Representative or my manager, [Manager info].

    Thanks,

    [Sister #4]"

Oops. Well, I have 9 others.
Was taking a shower this morning, felt kind of faint but thought I could make it.

    I was wrong.

I think I was leaning towards my towel and the next thing I knew I was on the floor, having fallen over the edge of our claw foot tub whose floor is a good 6" above the bathroom floor, banged my head on the tile floor, kicked over the space heater and dislocated my left pinkie finger.

    Ouch.

I immediately popped the finger back in place. Honestly, I'm lucky it wasn't worse.

I went to the doctor who was pretty uninterested in my pinkie and was VERY interested in the whole fainting thing. Got an EKG and a bunch of blood pressure tests (standing, sitting, lying) and other stuff.

Diagnosis: probably some fluid in my inner ear due to my long-lasting cold, stop taking my cold meds, a snack before showering might not be a bad idea and BE MORE CAREFUL IN THE SHOWER, DUMBASS.

    Rachel Ray, cannibal?
    So first I posted this:

    POP QUIZ

You're watching 30 Minute Meals with Rachael Ray.

She's making fish in parchment. As she's assembling them, she comments:

    "You can make these with..."

Do you expect her to say,

    A) chicken.
    B) pork.
    C) tofu.
    D) your children.

If you answered anything but D, you'd be wrong.

MrGiraffe and I didn't hear the next 4 instructions because we were too busy laughing.

    And now there's this.

    Hmmmm.

    Christmas of Twos
Had a nice mellow Christmas which was apparently the Christmas of Twos.

    Got:

    Red 2
    Despicable Me 2
    Kick Ass 2
Monster University (i.e. Monsters Inc. 2)
Teen Wolf Season 2 (and 3, Part 1)

and Impossible Cube (part 2 of the Doomsday Vault series, and also part 3, Dragon Men)

Made ham and green beans and au gratin potatoes.

Took a shower and washed the sheets, so sleeping tonight should be lovely.

Hope you all had a lovely day, celebrating or not!

    Victory conditions: Achieved!
Today I made turkey sandwiches, soup, and a'la king, which completes my A Christmas Story turkey dish list!

    \o/

I'd never made hash or a'la king before and both of them were delicious! I'll probably try them again during the year using chicken.

We also got the tree put together and I got all the window wreathes hung up and I made apple sauce. A very satisfying day.

    A Christmas Story Thanksgiving
I love the movie A Christmas Story, and especially the "dogs eat the turkey" scene.

The tradition in our house is turkey on Thanksgiving and ham on Christmas, and this year I got a free 19 pound turkey from the grocery store so this year's goal is to make all the things on the list!

"No turkey, no turkey sandwiches, no turkey salad, no turkey gravy, turkey hash, turkey a'la king, or gallons of turkey soup!"

We've already had turkey, and turkey gravy. I've already deconstructed the turkey and generated two big bags of meat (one white, one dark) and boiled the carcass with the neck and made stock for turkey soup later in the week.

This morning I made turkey hash using this recipe (with a few alterations) and it was delicious!

    Next up, turkey sandwiches! :D

ETA: Thanks for the recipe suggestions but the victory conditions are to make all the things on the movie list.

    Dear Pro Writer
    Dear Pro Writer,

No, no, no. This time you do want "defiantly" and not "definitely". "She crossed her arms definitely" just sounds silly.

    *facepalm*

    Better luck next time.

    Well, that was fun...
    ...not.

Back from two weeks of very limited internet access, taking care of my mother who fell and broke her hip. (She had a hip replacement and is back home and doing great.)

Two weeks is just too fucking long for me to be away from home. I was so homesick by about a week in that things I would normally be pissed at but take in stride were bringing me to tears. Ex. MrGiraffe sent me flowers for my birthday. After several days, some of them were looking bad so, without asking, my mother threw the whole bouquet out. Cue massive sobbing. From my POV, they were the only link I had to my husband and she put them in the garbage. I dug the still-viable ones out of the trash and they were still looking good by the time I left.

Also, her computer is in her bedroom which meant very limited access, so if anything important happened in the last two weeks, post a comment.

Belated thanks for all the lovely birthday wishes! And Happy Birthday to my twin, [personal profile] shayheyred! *hugs*

It's so damn good to be home!

    Dear author
    Dear Professional Author,

Fuck you. The R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore is NOT part of Johns Hopkins. It's part of the University of Maryland Medical Center. There *are* other universities in Baltimore besides Hopkins.

And it's not called "the Trauma Center". It's called "Shock Trauma".

Do a little research next time.

    No love-
