As an addendum: While I generally prescribe to the Secular Humanist viewpoint, I am perhaps slightly less agnostic than most. There was a quote from a physicist that was essentially, "There's nothing to discount the idea that the Universe was crested by a Supreme Being and the result was the Big Bang" and so I believe. However, I don't believe that this Supreme Being is involved in or affects our day-to-day lives.
On the other hand, I am a big believer in the placebo affect. If you feel that having people pray/send good thoughts/etc. will help you, it probably will. I also am a big believer in statistics. Even with the worst forms of cancer, there will always be a few spontaneous remissions. So my traditional response to people wishing for good thoughts is to reply *flings some petitions to the universe that the statistics fall your way* because after all, *someone* has to get the good stats.
Oh, and also, when I use the word "significant" I'm generally using it in the scientific meaning (i.e. statistically significant) and not in the general meaning (i.e. a large amount).
This contains a bit of giraffe-related material, and since she was thinking of me when she wrote it, I'm gonna claim it. *g* Crossed Wires by lynnmonster
Friending Policy: I don't filter, so if I have you friended, I read you. At this point, I'm near the limit of what I can comfortably handle. Therefore, I tend not to automatically friend back unless I've had some amount of interaction with you, either in RL or via comments in my LJ. So if you want me to friend you back, talk to me!
